Obituary for Joan of Arc
Jeanne d'Arc
Jeanne d'Arc, 19, Rouen, France died Thursday May 28, 1431, by execution under accounts of heresy. Jeanne was born Jan 6, 1412, in Domrémy, France. Jeanne was born a peasant but claimed divine guidance as she led the French army to victory in the Hundred Years' War. She was captured by the Burgundians and traded to the English army for money in 1430. There she was placed on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon for charges of insubordination
and heterodoxy. Although Jeanne died at a young 19 years of age she is regarded as a folk heroine of France, and serves as a Roman Catholic Saint. She was said to have profound religious and millitary visions. In these visions she was able to predict many millitary and strategical advances. Twenty-five years after her execution a court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined her trial and pronounced her innocent. Today she is regarded as the most influencial female figure from the Middle Ages.
